LIP TIP

When I first started wearing makeup, I never used to line my lips. In fact, I use to think it was super pointless and a waste of time. The older I got, the more I realized how important lining your lips is.

the one

Usually with a lip stain you don’t necessarily have to line your lips. But with any kind of lip stick or even sometimes a gloss, a lip liner can make all the difference. Do you ever wonder how to get those perfect Instagram lips? Yes a lot of people now have lip fillers but you do not necessarily need to get the needle for fuller lips! You can simply use a lip liner to overdraw your natural lip line and achieve your desired pout. With a lip liner, you can achieve those crisp edges and create that perfect cupid’s bow. Further advantages of lining you lips include longevity, fuller and shapelier lips, and can correct discolouration. With lining your lips and even filling them in with the lip liner and then topping it with your choice of lipstick or gloss, the colour will stay on much stronger and longer. Some people may also have some discolouration in their lips which can alter any lip colour if applied directly, but using a liner will definitely help. Using a nude liner can easily even out that discolouration and you can rock the lip colour of your choice.

My favourite drug store liners would be by Annabelle, NYX, Milani, Essence, or LA Girl. For higher end options I absolutely love MAC liners, they glide on great and have many colours to choose from. I personally prefer lip liners in the form of a pencil which you can sharpen instead of a retractable liner; I find that I have way more control in a pencil.

Meeting Mikasa + Discount Code

I love trying out more underrated brands and I am always on the hunt to find new faves.  “Mikasa Beauty” appeared on my radar, not too long ago, and they make brushes and makeup. So I decided to try out brushes and purchased the “5 Piece Complexion Brush Set”, which comes with:

  • Powder Brush
  • Tapered Contour Brush
  • Foundation Brush
  • Tapered Blending Brush
  • Eye Shader Brush

all brushesWhen I ordered my brush set there was a promotion going on where you get a concealer brush for free. You are able to buy individual brushes. An eye brush will cost you an average of 11-12 dollars (USD) and a face brush will vary from 12-21 dollars (USB). They also make lip brushes, beauty sponges, and makeup. At first use I immediately noticed the softness of these brushes. My favourites would include the powder and tapered contour brush. I love the powder brush because of its size, softness and how well it applies product. You can use this to powder your face and it works great, but I love it especially for bronzing.

size compare
(Left to right: Mikasa powder brush vs Coastal Scents powder brush)

The contour brush is quite tapered, as you’ll see in the pictures, and it helps outlines where you exactly want your product to be and then just merely blend it out. With the flat foundation brush, I personally do not use it for applying foundation; I use it more to apply moisturizer and primer. I love that the face brushes are super soft and the eye brushes a tad denser, not too much, which I personally look for in eye brushes.

In terms of packaging, this company did do a great job. They were individually boxed and within the boxes the brushes were wrapped as well, and no damage could be done during delivery. Delivery itself did not take an excessive time which I did appreciate.

packageThe only brush I probably will not using is the concealer brushes; I never use concealer brushes I find them quite pointless but that’s just me. I was more nervous about washing these brushes just because I’ve notice more bristle fallout when you wash brushes the first time, but I was pleasantly surprised when literally only one hair came out. The brushes dry to their original shape and are good to go again! I am looking forward to trying the E300 and E330 which are larger blending brushes and the beauty sponge. If you’re thinking of trying this brand out I’ve got a discount code so you can get 25% off >>> SUMANBEAUTY25 <<<

UPDATED MASCARA ROUTINE, NEW FAVES?

There used to be a time in my life where I was obsessed with mascara, loved trying new ones and finding the most perfect formula for my lashes. I, unfortunately, am not blessed with beautiful long lashes so it can be tricky to find a mascara which holds the curl well. Nowadays, I typically apply fake lashes because WHY NOT. I love that extra amount of drama to my eyes! I have tried so many mascara both drugstore and high end including Dior, Benefit Cosmetics, Too Faced, IT Cosmetics, Maybelline, and many more. But I find myself always reaching for the same ones each and every time. I believe last year I did review the Dior and L’Oréal Miss Manga mascara and L’Oréal was the better formula but this year I have fallen in love with another mascara.

BOTH

My go-to mascara for my top lashes is the “L’Oréal Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt”. No disrespect to the “Miss Manga” mascara, that will always be a favourite. The Butterfly Sculpt formula is amazing, not too running and not too drying either. But what is really amazing is the wand. This wand is quite innovative. The bristles do not go all the way around, instead stop halfway and there is a nice edge where the bristles end. This will all make more sense when you look at the picture down below. What the edge allows you to do is really get to the root of your lashes and coat as much as you can to ensure the most volume. With this edge, you can kind of get a tight line effect which only helps to make you lashes look more full. I need all the help I can get in the lash department, since mine aren’t the most noticeable without mascara.

LO

For my lower lashes I do use a different product, only because I find that some mascaras can bleed on your lower lash line and just create an unnecessary mess. I use the “Wet n Wild MegaLengeth Mascra”, I love this wand for my lower lashes because it’s so small and thin it coats my lashes perfectly without getting on my under eye area. Isn’t that just the worst when you’re almost done your makeup and mascara just makes a mess everywhere and you have you in with a cotton swab and salvage everything?

WW

Both these mascaras are awesome and very well priced. I’ve learned that just because a mascara is $40, it doesn’t mean it’ll do wonders. I do tend to stick to my drugstore faves but of course there are some amazing higher end favourites, such as “Too Faced Better Than Sex”.

Prices, without tax or shipping, for the products mentioned (CAD):

  • L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt: $10
  • Wet n Wild MegaLengeth Mascra: $6

Estée Edit, Yay or Nay?

Estée Lauder launched a collection, called Estée Edit, to attract more of a younger audience to their brand. Normally, Estée Lauder is known to be a classier brand and focusing not so much on teenagers but instead an older crowd. The faces for Estée Edit are Kendell Jenner and blogger Irene Kim and both have created an enormous storm on social media. These days social media is the best way to reach the younger audience so why not collab with two influential individuals with a strong social media following.

I decided to try out the “Fluid Metal Eyeshadow” in the shade “Party of 1”. This is a nice light pink colour perfect for the upcoming transition from winter to spring. When I first swatched this in store it seemed okay and of course I ended up buying it. It comes with a doe foot applicator but I decided to use a flat brush because I wanted a more precise application. This product states that this formula ‘sets with an intense wet metallic finish pops in photo’. This product does pop in photos but in person I did not like it whatsoever. This eyeshadow creases and cracks. The formula is a bit chunky and in person this shadow does not dry smooth, there is cracking when it dries. It does not look good at all. To get a fuller coverage of this metal eyeshadow you will have to go in a few times. I did apply this with a primer underneath the product, although it is not necessary. You can use this product for a light wash of colour and glitter on the lids but it is definitely not a product I would recommend.

Who knows, maybe the other shades might be different and possibly better when applied. But this particular shade really did not motivate me to try anymore. I hope they improve the formula. I do want to try the “Metallishadow Crème + Powder” from this collection.

Fave Drugstore Brand

My all-time favourite drugstore brand hands down is Rimmel London. I have tried a wide selection of their products and continue to repurchase. I have heard mixed reviews about Rimmel, it definitely suits some people more than others but I have never had a problem with it. I use a few Rimmel products every time I apply makeup and have developed some all-time favourites from their collection.

img_6289

I have been recently obsessed with foundations and was dying to try out Rimmel’s because I heard such good things. I picked up the ‘Match Perfection’ foundation in shade ‘203 True Beige’. When applied, my initial reaction was “OMG I need to remove it ASAP”. This foundation is scented and I am a tad sensitive to fragrance so the moment it hit me I could not bear it any longer. The main reason I reacted this way because I was surprised, especially since I didn’t smell it in store when I was finding my shade. I tried it again, and this time I was aware of the scent and I fell in love with the foundation. This has become my favourite drugstore foundation. It blends great and the colour matches my skin tone very well. The coverage is outstanding, definitely evens out my skin tone and doesn’t feel heavy. I have worn this foundation for pretty much my entire day and ran errands, did what I had to do and this foundation held up quite well. I will surely be trying their ‘Wake Me Up’ foundation as well.

To go along with the theme, I also tried their ‘Match Perfection’ loose powder. I’m not the biggest fan of baking my face or even the under eye area, I much rather prefer to lightly set it with a pressed powder. Nonetheless, I did bake with this powder and set my face with it and what I like best about it is that it’s quite light on the face. It did not dry up my under eye area whatsoever and set my foundation well without it washing my colour out. I absolutely love cleaning up my contour line with this and baking right underneath. This product also has a light smell to it as well, nothing too intense.

My all-time favourite setting powder is the Rimmel ‘Stay Matte’ pressed powder. I used the shade ‘001’ which is transparent. This is my third time repurchasing this product because I absolutely love it. I set my under eye area and the rest of my face with it and never have to retouch throughout the day. It is a very lightweight powder and has the slightest scent which is just perfect for me. I would definitely recommend this powder.

Sticking to powders, my all-time favourite bronzer is the Rimmel ‘Natural Bronzer’ in ‘022 Sun Bronze’. Again, I use this product every time I apply makeup and it has never failed it. It blends well and the colour is perfect for my skin tone. I have repurchased this product as well. It has proven to be long wearing; I wear it on night outs and even during the day when I just want some colour to my face. The colour isn’t too crazy pigmented where blending would be an issue, and the bronzer is very buildable.

17124835_10208343122552634_68021847_n

Rimmel came out with their new eyeshadow palettes, the ‘Magnif’Eyes Shadow’ and I purchased ‘003 Grunge Glamour’. This palette comes with 12 shades, a mixture of shimmers and mattes. This particular palette is much more cooled tones than the other two; it includes purple, blue, greys, a shimmery black and even brow bone highlights. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how well this palette worked. The shadows are pigmented and blend quite well. You can use these shadows wet or dry; to intensify your shades add some ‘Mac Fix Plus’ to your mix. Expect some fallout but nothing too crazy, the turn out of the eye look was great.

My go-to concealer is the Rimmel ‘Wake Me Up’ in the shade ‘020 True Ivory’. I have repurchased this product more than 4 times and use it almost every time I apply makeup. It gives me great coverage and it blends well. It comes in a tube with a doe foot applicator which is perfect to target specific areas. The only down side would be that Rimmel’s shade range in the concealer is very minimal. They only have light shades, which is a bummer for those looking for a deeper colour.

I recently purchased Rimmel’s ‘Lash Accelerator Mascara’ mainly due to the buzz circulating around it and the formula apparently makes your lashes longer. Since I have barely any lashes, I thought I’d give it a whirl. My initial impression was that this mascara, comparatively, is a tad creamier and wetter than I’m use to. This wasn’t a big issue whatsoever; the formula was a bit new to me. I do love the wand size of this mascara, it’s not too big and thick nor is it thin. The mascara applies smoothly and I particularly love it for my lower lashes, separates and elongates them.

17105293_10208343140593085_649501608_n

In terms of lip products, I was not a fan of the Rimmel ‘Provocalips’ which claimed to last for 16 hours. The formula wasn’t doing it for me and it didn’t last as long as it claimed. I thought it would’ve been more of a stain and long wearing, but not at all. But I am a fan of the Rimmel lipsticks. I have a few shades and I love them. They are creamy and glide on well. They are not transfer proof and don’t claim to be either. But the colours are very lovely and they stay on for a good amount of time but of course with eating and drinking you might have to reapply afterwards which is the case with non-stains. These lipsticks are definitely my favourite from the drugstore and I have repurchases shades, such as the red shade in ‘01’. I hear great buzz about the Rimmel lip liners which I will be trying in the near future for sure, cannot wait to get my hands on them.

The Master Palette

Mario Dedivanovic is an amazing makeup artist, teacher, and influencer. You may know him from being Kim Kardashian’s go to makeup artist, but he has worked with numerous celebrities for all sorts of different projects. There’s something very unique about Dedivanovic’s artistry, his work is just impeccable. When Mario Dedivanovic announced he would be collaborating with Anastasia Beverly Hills and coming out with a limited edition eyeshadow palette, I was freaking out. This palette went on sale in October and I placed an order as fast as I could and waited ever so patiently. Thankfully, Sephora does not take long to deliver.

img_6247

The “Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Master Palette by Mario” comes with 12 beautiful shades and a dual ended eyeshadow brush.  I’ve had this palette for about 3-4 months and it is my holy grail, my favourite eyeshadow palette, and the palette I reach most for when doing my makeup. I wanted to test this palette out properly and use it as much as I could to write an honest review. These shadows are top quality, the texture is very velvety. Blendability of these shadows is top notch and there is a great selection of colours, a mixture of matte and shimmer shades. These shadows probably are one of the best blending in my collection and you can create numerous different looks, such a dramatic smokey eye to a neutral day look. Pigmentation, as you’ll see in the swatches, is amazing. The shades included will look good with any eye colour and skin tone; it is definitely a versatile palette.

I truly love this palette, and have not had a single problem with it. I did not expect any less from Mario Dedivanovic, his passion for makeup and his artistry speaks for itself. Although, I do wish this palette wasn’t limited edition because I know I will be hitting pan soon and will probably have to look for dupes. I personally have only used the brush once or twice; I tend not to use the applicators the product comes with. I found that there was nothing special with the dual ended brush and stuck with my trusted blending brushes. Also, this is a cruelty free product.

My favourite shades in this palette include, ‘Lula’, ‘Isabel’, ‘Bronx’, ‘Muse’, and ‘5th Ave’. Check out Mario Dedivanovic’s work on Instagram @makeupbymario.

A Colourful Soul

“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”

-Marcus Aurelius

Valentine’s Day is coming up and I don’t know if I’m excited yet. Is that weird? This happens all the time and I’ll probably get more excited closer to the date. For this day, we always see the usual Valentine’s Day makeup, whether it’s a smoky eye or a soft eye look with the classic red lip. That’s all fine and dandy, but maybe you want to try something a bit more different and maybe even ‘out of this world’. I came up with a fun and unique purple glittery eye look paired with a nude lip, with the skin looking fresh, and glowing. With this look you’ll definitely knock out any date, and isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is all about 😛 I added a matching purple bindi, a decorative symbol worn on your forehead in Eastern cultures, which is completely your decision to wear. I do enjoy mixing Eastern and Western cultures; at times they can complement one another quite well.
