When I first started wearing makeup, I never used to line my lips. In fact, I use to think it was super pointless and a waste of time. The older I got, the more I realized how important lining your lips is.

the one

Usually with a lip stain you don’t necessarily have to line your lips. But with any kind of lip stick or even sometimes a gloss, a lip liner can make all the difference. Do you ever wonder how to get those perfect Instagram lips? Yes a lot of people now have lip fillers but you do not necessarily need to get the needle for fuller lips! You can simply use a lip liner to overdraw your natural lip line and achieve your desired pout. With a lip liner, you can achieve those crisp edges and create that perfect cupid’s bow. Further advantages of lining you lips include longevity, fuller and shapelier lips, and can correct discolouration. With lining your lips and even filling them in with the lip liner and then topping it with your choice of lipstick or gloss, the colour will stay on much stronger and longer. Some people may also have some discolouration in their lips which can alter any lip colour if applied directly, but using a liner will definitely help. Using a nude liner can easily even out that discolouration and you can rock the lip colour of your choice.

My favourite drug store liners would be by Annabelle, NYX, Milani, Essence, or LA Girl. For higher end options I absolutely love MAC liners, they glide on great and have many colours to choose from. I personally prefer lip liners in the form of a pencil which you can sharpen instead of a retractable liner; I find that I have way more control in a pencil.

Until Next TIme!

I am not one to wear foundation every single day; it’s just too much sometimes. So on my more chill days I love putting some concealer under the eyes and skipping foundation for the face. I especially love this for spring and summer where you just don’t feel like wearing too much makeup. With this in mind, I have tested out a few concealers and figured out what works for me and what does not. So I will be sharing my fave concealers and others which were a fail for me. Let’s begin!

“Hard Candy” is a brand which you can find at Walmart. I heard about a concealer they have in their collection and is supposedly very high coverage. This concealer is quite pigmented so WARNING ALERT, a little does go a long way. This is a heavy duty concealer and the coverage is great but they do not have a lot of shades to choose from. So if you are more of a deeper skin tone it will not work out with this concealer. That is the main downside. Overall this concealer is very full coverage and super pigmented. Another issue with this concealer is that if you do not use it long enough or put it way it does become watery and the next time you go to use it, a bunch of liquid will just come out. Shake it well before use. This is definitely not the best drugstore concealer in my opinion but the coverage does speak for itself.

Everyone is well aware of the “Maybelline Age Rewind” concealer; I do remember how much hype there was and still is surrounding this product. Unfortunately when I tested it out a few times I absolutely hated it. I do not like the consistency of it or the blendability of this product. Even when I blend it in as much as I can it still does not look seamless and it does crease. There is also not a large selection when it comes to finding your perfect shade. It doesn’t give off a natural finish, rather it brings more attention to your under eyes in a bad way. I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone looking for a new concealer, you can find a much better ones either drugstore or higher end.

My all-time favourite and go-to concealer is the “Rimmel Wake Me Up”. I have repurchased this product more than 4 times and use it almost every time I apply makeup. It gives me great coverage and it blends well. It comes in a tube with a doe foot applicator which is perfect to target specific areas. The only down side would be that Rimmel’s shade range in the concealer is very minimal. They only have light shades, which is a bummer for those looking for a deeper colour.

A new drugstore concealer I’ve been loving recently is the “LA Girl Pro Concealer”. There was also a lot of hype around this product being amazing and very affordable. The consistency is great, very creamy, and blends out wonderfully providing good coverage, but not full. LA Girl also came out with so many shades that you will definitely be able to find your perfect colour. This concealer has not creased on me and always offers a smooth finish to my skin. I cannot wait to try out the deeper tones for contour, as I have heard great reviews for using this product as a cream contour. For those more natural days I love skipping foundation and just popping concealer under the eyes and this one would be great.

Let’s talk about one of the most popular concealers at the moment, the “Tarte Shape Tape”. This does live up to the hype that it received. This product is only available online on the Tarte website. It comes with a good amount of product (10mL) and has a doe foot applicator. I would prefer a smaller sized applicator; I was quite surprised by it. I bought the shade “Tan Sand” and next time I would buy a shade lighter just so I can highlight as well. This concealer is full coverage and blends out well. It is scented, but not too strong. I am a bit fragrance sensitive, but it’s not extreme and I have no problem applying this concealer. Make sure to always set your concealer with either pressed or loose powder so it doesn’t crease or budge.

“Mac Pro Longwear Concealer” is one of those concealers that never seems to fail me.  It does provide quite a bit of coverage and lasts a long time. I love how this concealer does not cake up. I use this concealer for under the eyes and anywhere I may have redness. It blends out very well and is light weight. The downside for this product would be that it comes with a pump; I just hate getting it everywhere. Concealers should stick to doe foot applicators. You will see in the picture down below that I have the shade ‘NC42’ but I typically use ‘NC35’, it just that the MAC artist gave me the wrong shade so ‘NC42’ does not brighten my under eyes only provides coverage.

The best high end concealer I have ever tried would hands down be the “NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer”. It does not crease, blends amazing, and there is such a wide range of colours to choose from. I love that it does not dry out my under eye area, it hides any imperfections and redness. I can rave on and rave about this concealer but if you have not tried it you really should. This concealer trumps every other concealer I mentioned above. It is pricier and convincing yourself to continue to repurchase this product is difficult sometimes 😛 Nonetheless, the formula does speak for itself and I have not found a high end concealer that trumps NARS.

Let me know what concealers you love or would love to try next.

My First Set of Makeup Brushes

As we all know makeup brushes can be crazy expensive, sometimes even more than our makeup products. I remember when I first started getting into makeup, I of course needed a brush set that wouldn’t financially drain me. I did tons and tons of research and finally came across Coastal Scents. This cosmetics brand is known for its low prices yet good quality cosmetics and tools. This company is a great stand up against really expensive brands. Especially, if you’re new to makeup you probably won’t want to spend $20 on each brush or even $100 for a set. My first set of makeup brushes cost me $9.95 USD! That’s right, I bought a 12 piece brush set for $10. Normally, this brush set is listed for $25 on the Coastal Scents’ website, but they always have sales and promotions going on. I do remember, since I live in Canada, the shipping really took a toll. I spent around $35 total including shipping. Even though, for those who do not live in the United States, $35 for a 12 piece brush set is not bad at all.

I bought these brushes in 2014 and still use them every time I apply makeup. I’ve washed them over and over again, and still they are some of my favourite face and eye brushes. This set includes:

  1. Powder brush (natural)
  2. Angled blush brush (natural)
  3. Foundation brush (synthetic)
  4. Medium shadow brush (synthetic)
  5. Blender doefoot brush (synthetic)
  6. Blender pointed brush (natural)
  7. Concealer brush (synthetic)
  8. Detail round brush (synthetic)
  9. Detail pointed brush (synthetic)
  10. Angled liner brush (synthetic)
  11. Bent liner brush (synthetic)
  12. Lash brow comb (synthetic)

These brushes are soft, do not shed every use, and the quality is great. I have been using my Coastal Scents brushes for about 3 years, and continue to use them. Shipping was no problem whatsoever and surprisingly I received my package in a short amount of time. I will definitely repurchase from this company and try out more of their products. My brush collection has grown over the years and I use Coastal Scents brushes along with my Mac, Real Techniques, and Luxie brushes. My only regret would be not buying a bigger brush set. I do recommend these brushes to anyone just staring out with makeup or even individuals who are experienced in this field. It’s a great price for great quality brushes.

Need a Refresher?

Ever since I got into skincare, I’ve enjoyed experimenting with different brands to see what suits my skin the best. The thing with skincare is that it’s pretty much all trial and potential error. I’ve definitely gotten bad reactions from certain brands which have suited a lot of other people just fine. I have tested and added to my skincare routine with two new products, “Soy Face Cleanser” and “Rose Face Mask” by Fresh.

Fresh is a brand which is adamant on creating products infused with natural ingredients and leaving your skin feeling brand new. The “Soy Face Cleanser” is soft enough not to strip your skin of its hydration, but tough enough to wipe away dirt and makeup. After dampening my face I apply the cleanser and massage it all over my face and rinse. I enjoy how gentle this cleanser is on my skin. Typically, I find that most cleansers are very harsh and completely dries my skin out where I feel like I need to apply moisturizer immediately. I can cleanse my skin with this product, not apply moisturizer, and wake up with my usual skin, not any drier. This product is for all skin types. I do have sensitive skin and trying new products is always a tad risky and scary but the ingredients combined to create this cleanser have worked perfectly for my skin. It leaves the skin feeling so clean and wonderful.

The “Rose Face Mask” has creeped its way into my skincare routine. Whenever I feel like I need to rejuvenate my skin, I apply this all over my skin and wait 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing it off.  Like all of their other products, this mask is gentle enough to be used daily. This mask has not broken me out or caused any irritation or redness. This has become a mask I use the most frequently because of its formula and its results. This mask hydrates, tones, and tightens in a way where your skin does not feel stiff or dry. With continuous uses, you will surely be able to see a difference to your skin. This mask brings your skin back to life and soothes it comfortably.

These products are infused with more natural ingredients and leave the skin feeling FRESH. They give off a scent but are not heavily fragranced, which in my opinion nothing should be. Personally, heavy scents just give me a headache. A lot of skincare products give off a very strong smell; I especially found that to be true with Lancome. Those with sensitive skin, such as me, find it very difficult to use those types of products. Nonetheless, I will continue exploring Fresh and see what else this brand offers.

  • Rose Face Mask (100mL or 3.4oz): $75

Lipstick or Lip Gloss?

Find your own way, have an open spirit, and believe in your own beauty -Francois Nars

Everyone has their favourite brands and for some time now NARS has definitely made its way onto my list. So when I heard they were launching a new lip product I was immediately interested and could not wait to get my hands on it. NARS launched its “Velvet Lip Glide” not too long ago and it’s somewhat of an ingenious product. I purchased two colours, “Bound” which is a nude rose pink shade and “Unspeakable” which is a beautiful berry shade.

What makes this product unique is definitely its formula! The Lip Glide is a semi matte product, which is great for anyone who is sick of the matte lip trend. Personally, I got over the matte lip a few months ago it was just too drying for me. This is the perfect option since these Lip Glides are very hydrating but still has great pigmentation like a matte lip would. Typically I would assume a lip gloss to be more on the sheer end of the spectrum but this product is true to the shade you see in the bottle.

The product feels weightless on your lips, hydrates at the same time and goes on effortlessly with its doe foot applicator. True to its name, it does “glide” on well. Another upside to this product is that it isn’t sticky. Does anyone else absolutely hate that sticky feeling some lip products give? Definitely one of my pet peeves! The NARS Lip Glide has become a new fave lip product because it offers a great selection of shades, from neutrals to darks, it feels very comfortable and hydrating on your lips, and there is no false advertising for the shades. In terms of smell, the Lip Glides give off more of a sweet scent but not too strong where people who are sensitive to fragrance, such as myself, would be unable to wear it.

Do keep in mind that this product is not transfer proof, so if you are eating or drinking the product will surely come off a bit. NARS also does not advertise that the Lip Glides will stay on for a certain amount of hours so do not be surprised if you find yourself reapplying, it is of course the formula of a lip gloss not a matte lip. What I have noticed is if the product does comes off, your lips are still tinted with the shade you had on quite a bit. I especially found this more with the darker shades, such as “Unspeakable”. I personally do like the tint because even if the product comes off, there is still some colour and your lips are not naked.

The Velvet Lip Glide is a perfect blend of a lipstick and a gloss and hopefully a new trend for 2017.

Wish I Had a Time Machine!

The world of fashion has taken a step back into an earlier decade! The 90’s have snuck their way back into our lives once again. Who didn’t love the 90s? Life seemed much simpler back then. Let’s be real, who didn’t want to live in the world of Friends? It would be great to live in an era where technology wasn’t everything, and one would meet their friends at a nice coffee shop to hang out and catch up. Alas, that is not the world we live in today. But traveling back in time is not difficult through FASHION!

This look was inspired a bit by the 90s, more specifically, high waisted ripped mom jeans. Mouthful, am I RIGHT?! Nonetheless, I paired these jeans with a retro-esk red striped sweater and accessorized accordingly.

  • Jeans: TopShop (“Mom High Waisted”)
  • Sweater: H&M
  • Hat: H&M
  • Sunglasses: Aldo

I did not list all of the makeup I used, just a few products I thought were worth mentioning.

  • Foundation: L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte (“105-Natural Beige”)
  • Lips: NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick (“Vintage”)
  • Contour: Sleek  Face Contour Kit (“Medium 885”)
  • Highlight: Becca (“Champagne Pop”) & MAC (Soft & Gentle)
  • Mascara: L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt (“Black”)

MAC is Back

MAC Cosmetics has done it again. Just released last week, this new addition has already become a crowd pleaser. The MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour, yes it is quite a mouthful, will definitely become a year-round favourite. This product goes on wet and dries completely matte, giving you a very polished look. I tried out the shade “Recollection” and cannot wait to get my hands on the other shades. I applied in around 12:30pm and did not have to reapply throughout the entire day. The test was definitely fair, I ate, drank, and went to the gym, and the colour did not budge. It may have looked a tad odd wearing such a purple colour whilst working out but I just had to test it out. The colour payoff is amazing, what you see in the packaging is definitely what you get.

2016-01-15 11.39.35

One of my fears when trying out matte lip products is whether or not it will dry out my lips throughout the day, but the Mac’s Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour is very comfortable and not harsh on my lips whatsoever. In comparison to products such as the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, this product will not dry your lips out. The Liquid Lipcolour is very longwearing no matter what the activity. I would definitely recommend this product for a night out because there will be no need for touch ups. Touching up your makeup might become a challenge especially the more intoxicated one might get throughout the night 😛 The applicator itself is another pro for this product, it is flat on both slides but a bit pointed at the top so applying the lipstick and creating the perfect lip shape is much easier. The formulation is great; the product glides on nicely and  the product is not watery but a good consistency, allowing for a clean finish. In Canada, the Retro Matte Liquid Lipsticks retails for $24, which is a fantastic price for such a lasting lip product.

Until next time.
