Estée Edit, Yay or Nay?

Estée Lauder launched a collection, called Estée Edit, to attract more of a younger audience to their brand. Normally, Estée Lauder is known to be a classier brand and focusing not so much on teenagers but instead an older crowd. The faces for Estée Edit are Kendell Jenner and blogger Irene Kim and both have created an enormous storm on social media. These days social media is the best way to reach the younger audience so why not collab with two influential individuals with a strong social media following.

I decided to try out the “Fluid Metal Eyeshadow” in the shade “Party of 1”. This is a nice light pink colour perfect for the upcoming transition from winter to spring. When I first swatched this in store it seemed okay and of course I ended up buying it. It comes with a doe foot applicator but I decided to use a flat brush because I wanted a more precise application. This product states that this formula ‘sets with an intense wet metallic finish pops in photo’. This product does pop in photos but in person I did not like it whatsoever. This eyeshadow creases and cracks. The formula is a bit chunky and in person this shadow does not dry smooth, there is cracking when it dries. It does not look good at all. To get a fuller coverage of this metal eyeshadow you will have to go in a few times. I did apply this with a primer underneath the product, although it is not necessary. You can use this product for a light wash of colour and glitter on the lids but it is definitely not a product I would recommend.

Who knows, maybe the other shades might be different and possibly better when applied. But this particular shade really did not motivate me to try anymore. I hope they improve the formula. I do want to try the “Metallishadow Crème + Powder” from this collection.

Tarte Tarte Tarte

I have found some new brand faves and could not wait to share them with you. Tarte Cosmetics is a cruelty free makeup brand and has amazing products to offer. Let’s begin with skincare! Recently, I decided to try out the “Tarte Rainforest of Sea Deep Dive Cleansing Gel” and it has become my favourite cleanser at the moment. What I love most about this product is that it doesn’t make your skin feel dry afterwards and really locks in moisture. The packaging is absolutely lovely and best of all it comes with a pump. I use 1-2 pumps for my face. Prior to this cleanser, I was using the “Clean and Clear” cleanser and that product really does not lock in any moisture nor does it do the job too well. In comparison, the Tarte cleanser deep cleans and when I go in with my toner there is very minimal dirt or any left-over product on the cotton pad. I would highly recommend this cleanser to any skin type and its low fragranced which is great for anyone who is sensitive or just dislikes strongly scented products.

IMG_6304

Continuing with skincare, my next favourite product is the “Tarte Maracuja Oil”. I use this product when my face is intensely dry or dull and my skin needs that extra bit of help. I use it after I cleanse and tone and apply about 2-3 drops onto my clean hands and apply it to my face and neck. It really gives your face a brighter and healthier glow and helps with dryness especially during these winter months. I do not use it every day because I find it too ‘strong’ to use daily. There’s nothing wrong with using it every day, I tend to use it when my skin really needs it. The “Maracuja Oil” makes your skin softer and visibly lifted.

Let’s talk about one of the most popular concealers at the moment, the “Tarte Shape Tape”. This does live up to the hype that it received. This product is only available online on the Tarte website. It comes with a good amount of product (10mL) and has a doe foot applicator. I would prefer a smaller sized applicator; I was quite surprised by it. I bought the shade “Tan Sand” and next time I would buy a shade lighter just so I can highlight as well. This concealer is full coverage and blends out well. It is scented, but not too strong. I am a bit fragrance sensitive, but it’s not extreme and I have no problem applying this concealer. Make sure to always set your concealer with either pressed or loose powder so it doesn’t crease or budge.

Lastly, my favourite foundation at the moment is the “Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation” and I am in the shade “light medium honey”. This foundation is amazing! I first got a sample and used it about 3 times and just had to buy it. I have combination skin so some areas a bit dryer than others. This foundation works wonderfully for me. It’s hydrating and doesn’t cling to the dry areas of my face. Its medium coverage but definitely buildable and gives the face such a radiant finish. This foundation is very lightweight and perfectly covers any uneven skin tones and redness. The formula is unique; I’ve never tried anything like it before. This foundation does not cake up and comes with a pipette-style dropper applicator.  Highly recommend this foundation.

I cannot wait to try out the “Tarteiest Pro Amazonian Clay Palette” and the “Aquacealer Concealer”.

  • Tarte Maracuja Oil (7mL): Sample Size

The Master Palette

Mario Dedivanovic is an amazing makeup artist, teacher, and influencer. You may know him from being Kim Kardashian’s go to makeup artist, but he has worked with numerous celebrities for all sorts of different projects. There’s something very unique about Dedivanovic’s artistry, his work is just impeccable. When Mario Dedivanovic announced he would be collaborating with Anastasia Beverly Hills and coming out with a limited edition eyeshadow palette, I was freaking out. This palette went on sale in October and I placed an order as fast as I could and waited ever so patiently. Thankfully, Sephora does not take long to deliver.

img_6247

The “Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Master Palette by Mario” comes with 12 beautiful shades and a dual ended eyeshadow brush.  I’ve had this palette for about 3-4 months and it is my holy grail, my favourite eyeshadow palette, and the palette I reach most for when doing my makeup. I wanted to test this palette out properly and use it as much as I could to write an honest review. These shadows are top quality, the texture is very velvety. Blendability of these shadows is top notch and there is a great selection of colours, a mixture of matte and shimmer shades. These shadows probably are one of the best blending in my collection and you can create numerous different looks, such a dramatic smokey eye to a neutral day look. Pigmentation, as you’ll see in the swatches, is amazing. The shades included will look good with any eye colour and skin tone; it is definitely a versatile palette.

I truly love this palette, and have not had a single problem with it. I did not expect any less from Mario Dedivanovic, his passion for makeup and his artistry speaks for itself. Although, I do wish this palette wasn’t limited edition because I know I will be hitting pan soon and will probably have to look for dupes. I personally have only used the brush once or twice; I tend not to use the applicators the product comes with. I found that there was nothing special with the dual ended brush and stuck with my trusted blending brushes. Also, this is a cruelty free product.

My favourite shades in this palette include, ‘Lula’, ‘Isabel’, ‘Bronx’, ‘Muse’, and ‘5th Ave’. Check out Mario Dedivanovic’s work on Instagram @makeupbymario.

The wand chooses the wizard

“Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”

-Albus Dumbledore

Harry Potter wand-inspired makeup brushes do exist and I am in love. Storybook Cosmetics is a fairly new company and they are strictly inspired by literary works and creating makeup products and tools which coincide. When I first heard the buzz surrounding these brushes, as a Potterhead, I just had to have them. I waited for the pre-sale, ordered, and waited for them to arrive. Just holding them, my first impression was that they are definitely not made cheap; these are sturdy brushes that should last some time. They are finely crafted brushes and the detail is CRAZY! The product definitely shows the hard work that has been put into these brushes.

img_6241

I finally got the chance to try them out and I do like them, they are soft and get the job done well. The blending brush is great and I’m sure it will become a favourite. The only thing is that I’m use to a smaller sized brush for blending. This isn’t an issue whatsoever; it’s just something I will surely get used to. If you are used to the MAC 217 brush for blending, this wand brush is a tad bigger. For comparison, I will say that this brush is the most similar to the MAC 224SH. As I mentioned earlier, these brushes are very soft and I was concerned that they would not blend the eyeshadow well or pick up enough product, but that was not the case at all. The brush fibers are very strong and secure; even if you pull them they will not come out. I have also washed these brushes, alongside all of my other brushes, and they did not shed and dried as good as new.

This is the look I created using these brushes, blending became my cardio:

eyes-closed

For $55USD or about $60CDN (without tax or shipping) you get 5 eyeshadow brushes. You get:

  • Angled eyeliner brush (Hermione’s Wand)
  • Flat eyeshadow brush (Voldemort’s Wand)
  • Domed detail brush (Harry’s Wand)
  • Angled blending brush (Ron’s Wand)
  • Fluffy blending brush (Dumbledore’s Wand)

img_6236

$60 is quite on par for 5 brushes with other companies, even if you were to buy 5 from MAC Cosmetics, Sigma, or Zoeva, they would be around the same price or even more. Storybook Cosmetics is also a cruelty free brand! Every time I use these brushes I end up playing with them and start passionately saying “EXPELLIARMUS”! But then all I can ever imagine is Professor Snape saying, “There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class.” Did you read that in his voice? I know I definitely did 😛

Make it POP like Champagne

Highlighting is all the rage and shows no signs of disappearing anytime soon. Not only is it enough to highlight with one product, but layering has also become a trend. I will be reviewing two illuminators, more on the affordable side. The first is by NYX, the “Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Gleam”. Second illuminator we have is by Sephora, “Radiant Luminizing Drops in Ultra Light”.

img_5613

In terms of consistency, NYX definitely takes the cake! Sephora’s illuminator is a tad too runny and watery. I find it harder to control the product when it comes to application. “Born to Glow” illuminator, by NYX, has a thicker consistency which I personally prefer since it is easier to apply and work with.

Sephora (left) NYX (right)

Application differs greatly as well, as I mentioned above I do prefer a thicker consistency since I find it easier to apply and blend. I tend to use my finger to apply liquid illuminators and if needed, I use a sponge to blend. Consistency does coincide with application and the Sephora illuminator is just a nuisance to apply. As with any makeup product, pigmentation is a huge factor. This post seems rather one sided 😛 But what can I say, NYX is the better pigmented product. This all does depend on what you are looking for from the product. If you want that extra blinding glow where you use an illuminator as a base for your powder highlight, NYX is what you are looking for as a drugstore option. If you want that subtle glow, great, try out the Sephora illuminator it will give you just that. I have tried layering my powder highlight over the Sephora illuminator and it does not give me my blindly OMG glow. I do believe a good base will provide a good end result.

img_5632

The powder highlights I use on a regular are “Champagne Pop by Becca” and “Soft & Gentle by Mac”. The one upside with the Sephora illuminator is that it includes a dropper applicator which is helpful when you do not want waste a whole bunch of product. The NYX illuminator is obviously the better product in my opinion. The product itself is pigmented, easy to work with, and affordable!

Prices, without tax,  for the products mentioned (CAD):

  • NYX the “Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Gleam” $10
  • Sephora “Radiant Luminizing Drops in Ultra Light” $19

Liquid Lipstick Review

Hey hey!

(Featured song: “Stay Stay Stay” by Taylor Swift)

I’m back with another review. I have recently discovered the different brands of liquid lipsticks I have acquired over some time and will be reviewing them today. I have included drugstore and non-drugstore brands. Let’s get right into it.

IMG_5128

“Echo” by Kat Von D

  • $24CDN
  • Kat Von D never ceases to amaze everyone with her makeup collection. “Echo” is an enchanting deep navy blue colour, definitely an eye catcher
  • Full coverage and long wear
  • Dries completely matte, but I found it to be too dry for my lips. It’s not a painfully dry feeling, just a tad uncomfortable
  • Bold

“Recollection” by MAC

  • $24CDN
  • I do prefer MAC lipsticks in general to other more expensive brands because they glide on much easier and your lips stay moisturized
  • This is a majestic purple, a colour that leaves an impression
  • This formulation does not have strong longevity in comparison to Kat Von D’s liquid lipsticks. Nonetheless, it will stay longer than regular lipsticks

“Kiss Fatal” by Rimmel

  • $8CDN
  • This liquid lipstick claims to last for 16 hours and is ‘kiss proof’. I have tested two shades from their range, and it does last a pretty long time and it is non-transferrable
  • This product requires two steps. First, you apply the colour on your lips. Secondly, apply the ‘lock & shine’ step.
  • Disadvantages: its sticky and not a matte liquid lipstick
  • I would not re-purchase because there is nothing too special about this product. The colours could be better and more unique and there is definitely better formulation out there for a liquid lipstick

“It’s Happening” by Too Faced

  • $25CDN
  • I am in love with this line! This shade is a bright magenta which suits all skin types. The formulation is one of all-time favourites, it’s very comfortable to wear and it is long wear
  • It dries completely matte and does not dry the lips out
  • Rich and creamy formula

“Always Red” by Sephora

  • $18CDN
  • This has become my all-time favourite red lip product
  • It dries matte and is not too dry for the lips
  • Great formulation because the product is very lightweight on the lips and is long wear
  • There are so many shades of red, but I found this one to be a classic bold red
  • Will continue to re-purchase for the rest of my life

“Rio” by Anastasia Beverly Hills”

  • $26CDN
  • If you’re looking for an electric hot pink with a blue undertone look no further
  • ABH liquid lipsticks are amazing, long wear, dry matte, great colour payoff and texture
  • These lipsticks smell great, the products are low in scent which I always prefer
  • Layering this product up will not do it any good. One or two layers is more than enough

“Soft Spoken” by NYX

  • $10CDN
  • The colour is more of a dark nudish-rose, but not brown
  • Amazing colour payoff and texture
  • Dries matte with a hint of transfer but nothing too crazy
  • Long lasting, but might need a bit of a touch up here and there
  • One tiny complaint would be the smell. It’s a bit of an odd plastic scent but the quality does overcome this small flaw
  • NYX is a great affordable brand

IMG_5196

***I would suggest using a primer before applying any lip product. I use the “Prep and Prime Lip” by MAC, which retails for $20CDN***

IMG_5135

What I have learned is that most liquid lipsticks have an odd scent, but nothing too strongly atrocious.

Until next time!

“Rio”

So I decided to step out of my comfort zone a bit and buy a crazy shade of lipstick. Now, this may not be crazy for some but for me it totally is! A few weeks ago I decided to try out a liquid lipstick by Anastasia Beverly Hills in “Rio”. This shade is an electric hot pink shade, with a blue undertone, that cannot go unnoticed and dries completely matte. For a bit of a comparison, I would definitely prefer the ABH liquid lipsticks over Kat Von D’s “Everlasting Liquid Lipstick” only because it is not as drying on the lips. The ABH lipsticks retail for about $26CND, which isn’t too bad for the quality of the product.

My outfit was quite simple because I wanted the focus to remain on the lips. I refrained from using any other makeup products and accessorized with a pair of faux glasses.

It is true, I am 113% obsessed with my MOM JEANS!

Outfit

  • Jeans: Topshop (“Mom High Waisted”)
  • Tee: Express
  • Faux Glasses: Ardene
